Double Dragon is a renowned beat 'em up video game series created by Technōs Japan, making its debut in 1987 as an arcade game. The narrative revolves around twin martial artists, Billy and Jimmy Lee, engaged in fierce battles against various foes and competitors.

The original Double Dragon marked a significant milestone in the arcade gaming realm, propelling the beat 'em up genre into a "Golden Age" era. This success paved the way for a multitude of similar games throughout the late 1980s to the 1990s, all influenced by the conventions set by this iconic series.

Spawning from its popularity, Double Dragon led to the creation of a 1993 animated series and a live-action film adaptation in 1994, albeit both received considerable criticism from both reviewers and audiences alike.

The series' inaugural game, Double Dragon, hit arcades in 1987, followed by versions tailored for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 and Game Boy in 1990. Besides these iterations, additional licensed versions were also developed by various studios for platforms like the Master System, Atari consoles, Genesis, Atari Lynx, and home computers.

The arcade saw two sequels: Double Dragon II: The Revenge in 1988 and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone in 1990. The NES received adaptations of these sequels as well — Double Dragon II: The Revenge in 1989 and Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones in 1991, respectively.

In 1991, an unrelated storyline surfaced with the release of Double Dragon II for Game Boy. Then, exclusively for the Super NES in 1992, the last game from Technōs' original team was unleashed under the title Super Double Dragon.

A distinctive addition to the series was the Game Gear release of Double Dragon, offering new gameplay mechanics that leaned more towards Streets of Rage than a mere port of the original arcade version.

In 1994, Tradewest introduced Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, designed for Super NES and Genesis markets in North America and Europe. This particular release was a fighting game developed by Leland Interactive drawing inspiration from Bohbot Entertainment's Double Dragon animated TV series. A version for Jaguar emerged through Telegames.
